"...a new phase in the social court etiquette of Washington..."

Abraham Lincoln: Invitation to the First White House Dinner Dance. 5.25" x 2.5" engraved invitation to the White House from "The President & Mrs. Lincoln" extended to Senator Collamer of Vermont. This was the first White House Presidential Ball/ Dinner and occurred on February 5, 1862. There were 600-700 guests in attendance who were treated to a midnight supper. Tragically, young Willie Lincoln had taken ill so his concerned parents had to periodically excuse themselves from the gathering to attend a bedside vigil. The child never recovered and succumbed on February 20th. The lot includes the transmittal envelope from Collamer to his daughter Frances in Rutland, together with a three-page letter. "I rec'd. a card from the President & Mrs. L. which I enclose you, as a novelty. Hitherto no invitations have been sent except to dinners & no visits except general receptions. The receptions continue but I have heard of no dinners. This card looks like having invited evening parties as a substitute for dinners, but possibly it is not so. At any rate, it is a new phase in the social court etiquette of Washington."
