Abraham Lincoln: Election of 1860 Eyewitness Accounts. Pair of letters written in 1860 describing, first-hand, the presidential election. The first is a 4-page letter written from Lowell, Massachusetts on November 10, 1860 (with postal used transmittal envelope). After the usual chit-chat, the female writer (Kate Danforth) states, beginning on page three, "We are having great times here on Politics, the girls in the house, are all for Lincoln and they say I am a Democrat, so I defend that side as well as I can and I assure you, we have some warm secessionists. There is one in the number (a New Yorker). She will get so mad that she will turn as red as a rooster (as the saying goes) and it is fun for me to talk with her. Next Wednesday night the Railsplitters are going to have a parade of torch lights and fire works, & c." (written in light, but legible pen). The second is a 4-page letter written from Circleville on November 7, 1860. On page two, Hattie declares: "I guess I will have to talk politics awhile. Yesterday was 'Lection. Hurrah!!! Hurrah!!! For Lincoln, he is elected by an overwhelming majority. Are you Lincoln, if not I pity you. We are having big times here over the election. I guess your Uncle Wm. Feels rather blue today. Have you any Wide Awakes in your place. There is a Republican party here, by that name they march on the streets with their torches very frequently and look very fine. Lizzie & I followed them one night until 12 o'clock, but we were not alone. I had more fun that night than a little, nearly every body was on the street, a great many houses were illuminated and everything looked very beautiful."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
