Abraham Lincoln: Decorative Chicago Imprint of the Emancipation Proclamation. 10.5" x 14.25" pre-fire imprint done in black, red and green, titled "Emancipation Proclamation." It reprints both the preliminary proclamation of September 22, 1862 and the final proclamation of January 1, 1863. Published by Rufus Blanchard of Chicago who includes some editorial comments on the bottom praising the proclamation. He says it will prevent foreign countries from recognizing the Confederacy and provides a "powerful incentive to the slave to fight for the Union instead of his rebel master". He also predicts that, after restoration of the Union, "the colored man will leave the Northern regions, wither he had fled from slavery, and join his kindred beneath those sunny skies where nature invites him." Trimmed, as shown, with 5 or 6 tears neatly repaired with archival paper tape on verso. A significant piece.
