Abraham Lincoln: Celebrating the Union Victory at Antietam. George McClellan was viewed as the principal Union commander in 1862, even though his battlefield victories had been few and inconsequential for the most part. He finally gained some respect at Antietam, repelling the forces led by Robert E. Lee and "Stonewall" Jackson. This 12" x 15" lithographed cartoon depicts a boxing contest between Lee (called "Charles" Lee in reference to the Revolutionary War traitor) and McClellan. It is titled "The Last Round. Won by Little Mac against Big Charley." European leaders watch as Jeff Davis exclaims "My Game is Up" and Lincoln encourages his champion "Give him fits my darling!" The handlers are African Americans and Lee appears ready to throw in the sponge. The printer is unspecified, but it was issued by "Wilkes Spirit of the Times", a New York publication that appealed to upper class sports aficionados. It is unpublished in standard reference works and quite rare.
