Abraham Lincoln & Stephen Douglas: Lincoln Speech While Running For The Senate 1858 And Douglas On Dred Scott Decision.The Lincoln speech delivered in Springfield, Saturday Evening, July 17, 1858. 8 pages on one folding sheet, 6" x 9.5", unbound, three staples at edge, else fine. A speech from Lincoln's battle against Stephen Douglas for the United States Senate. Lincoln contrasts himself against the popular Douglas, who was widely considered to be a presidential prospect, and a fertile ground for potential patronage: "On the contrary, nobody has ever expected me to be President. In my poor, lean, lank face, nobody has ever seen that any cabbages were sprouting out." Lincoln also discusses the slavery question, and defends his "House Divided" speech against Douglas's misinterpretation. A variant edition was issued under the title "Reply of Hon. Abraham Lincoln, to Hon. S.A. Douglas". Only 7 copies of either edition are traced in OCLC. Byrd, Illinois 2960; Monaghan 12. The Douglas pamphlet being "Kansas, Utah, and the Dred Scott Decision. Remarks Of Hon. Stephen A. Douglas". Speech delivered on June 12, 1857, 8pp., 6.5" x 9.75", edge wear, partially uncut, good condition. Dred Scott (c. 1799 - September 17, 1858) was an enslaved African American man in the United States who unsuccessfully sued for his freedom and that of his wife and their two daughters in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case of 1857, popularly known as the "Dred Scott case". Scott claimed that he and his wife should be granted their freedom because they had lived in Illinois and the Wisconsin Territory for four years, where slavery was illegal and their laws said that slaveholders gave up their rights to slaves if they stayed for an extended period. This tract provides Douglas's opinion. Some wear, else fine. Both pamphlets are quite rare.
