Abraham Lincoln: 1840 Presidential Elector Poll Book. Issued in Texas Township, Illinois, this manuscript poll book records the votes for Van Buren and Harrison presidential electors in the election of 1840. Abraham Lincoln was a Harrison elector in 1840. His name appears three times in the book. The document measures 15" x 12" (unfolded). The interior pages are a continuation of the front page. The Van Buren slate got 40 votes and the Harrison slate got 21 votes in this heavily-Democratic southern township. Some toning and small edge loss resulting from the wax seal being broken. Interesting, even at this early date, they managed to get Lincoln's first name right (Abraham, rather than Abram). Lincoln was a presidential elector in 1840, 1844 and 1856, but lost all three times.
