    Description

Abolition: Anti-Texas as Slave State Circular. The admission of Texas as a slave state was a controversial topic in the election of 1844, propelling pro-slavery Democrat James K. Polk into the White House. This is a 7.5" x 9.5" printed circular on blue paper, matted and framed along with a color photocopy of the back side, Boston, November 3, 1845. A committee of noted abolitionists had written a speech "to resist the admission of Texas as a slave state." They sent copies of the speech to area ministers, hoping they would preach against the admission of another slave state, wielding whatever influence they could. The list of the committee members, signed in type below, is a veritable Who's Who of the abolition movement, including: William Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips, Charles Sumner, Henry Wilson and John G. Whittier. Since Congress was scheduled to meet in four weeks' time, this grass roots effort was undertaken to sway public opinion and inspire them to write to their representatives.
