    Description

[John Brown]: Rare Free Kansas Contribution Certificate. 8" x 4 ¼" engraved certificate issued by the "Free State Kansas Fund". It is #38 and acknowledges the rather substantial contribution of $207 "... for the relief of the Free State Citizens of Kansas and the establishment of FREEDOM in that Territory." Signed by S. N. Gifford as Secretary and G. L. Stevens as President. Printed by Hoffman, Knickerbocker & Company of Albany. Likely dates from 1856 and "Bleeding Kansas" when pro and anti-slavery settlers battled one another. Various groups were organized throughout the country to provide money and arms to the contending factions. "Border Ruffians" descended on the state, sacking Lawrence and Osowatomie, provoking reprisals and additional bloodshed.
