[De Witt Clinton]: Election of 1812 Electoral College Document. 8" x 9 ½" printed and manuscript stampless cover signed by Massachusetts Governor Caleb Strong, Council Chamber [Boston], November 21, 1812, Commonwealth of Massachusetts letterhead. The letter certifies that Benjamin Heywood of Worcester has been chosen as a Presidential Elector following the presidential election of 1812 and is directed per the "Resolve of October 22nd, 1812" [not enclosed] to "meet at the State House, in Boston, on Tuesday, the first day of December." The Federalist candidate, De Witt Clinton, won Massachusetts that year and was awarded their Electoral College votes, but lost to James Madison. Restoration to small area of loss middle right, caused by the application of sealing wax to seal the letter. Needless to say, finding material associated with the election of 1812 is nearly impossible.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
