Description
[Abraham Lincoln]: Train Pass to Dedication of Gettysburg Cemetery. We offer two items that belonged to Abraham Hiestand Glatz (1835-1894) of Hellem, Pennsylvania. A graduate of Princeton, Glatz was elected to the Pennsylvania State House and Senate. He was a Brigadier General in the State Militia and served a three-month stint in the Union army in 1861 as Staff Quartermaster of the 16th Pennsylvania Regiment Jackson Guards. The highlight of his life may have been when he traveled to Gettysburg and heard President Lincoln deliver the Gettysburg Address. The first item is a 3.75" x 2.25" railroad pass issued to Glatz on the Northern Central Rail Way, part of the "Excursion of Loyal Governors to the Dedication of the National Cemetery, Gettysburg." Dated November 19, 1863 and signed by Lt.-Col. Jonathan A. Wright, Aide-de-Camp to Governor Curtin. Wright was elected to the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1846 and became a leading authority on all matters railroad-related. Very nice condition with just light, normal aging. Sold together with a small hand-out card promoting the election of Glatz to the State Senate circa 1862. We believe this pass to be one-of-a-kind. Five years ago, a War Department pass for Gideon Welles & his family to travel to Gettysburg by train came on the market, selling for $43,200. Even Secretary of the Navy Welles needed an official document to pass through the lines in security-conscious Washington. Because of his work load, Welles chose not to attend. We assume Glatz did make the trip to Gettysburg. Great cross-over appeal to railroad, Civil War and Lincoln collectors. Exceptional!Auction Info

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
