[Abraham Lincoln]: Alexander Gardner's Pass to the Trial of the Conspirators. 3.5" x 2.125" thick paper pass, "Military Commission, Washington, 26 May 1865" signed by David Hunter, President of the Commission. Completed in manuscript [admitting] "Mr Gardner & two friends" (in the hand of Gardner, we believe). Endorsed on verso by "J. F. Hartranft S.P.M. Genl" [Special Provost Marshal General]. Hartranft was a commander at the Old Capital Prison where the convicted conspirators were confined and executed. The hanging was photographed by Gardner in a series of images. The card is housed in an envelope inscribed "Card admitting to Conspiracy trial held at the old arsenal. I went once and saw Mrs. Suratt [sic] and the other poor creatures. Father made a photograph of the execution." A great item.
