[Abraham Lincoln]: 1863 Letter Describing Anti-Lincoln Pro-Vallandigham Rally. 7.75" x 9.75" bifolium letter written in pencil by Albert Vanfossen to the editor of the Hanover [Ohio] Patriot. There are 2 1/2 pages that detail the mottoes used on banners used in a Vallandigham for Governor political rally. Examples include: "Father Protect Us From Negro Equality/ Old Abe Split the Union/ That's what's the matter" and "Vallandigham, Pue and Peace/ No Equality with the Negro/ The Constitution Our Political Guide". The conclusion of his reports reads: "The black abolishenist [sic] came so near dieing [sic] that day at Hanover, they had to toll the death bell & hoist the black flag and closed business for the day." An evocative snapshot into a tumultuous period in our history!
