Richard Nixon: True "First Printing" of "Checkers" Speech. 14-page mimeographed typescript of "Address of Senator Richard M. Nixon/ Los Angeles, California/ Tuesday, September 23, 1952: 6:30-7:00 p.m." Measures 8 1/2" x 14". Prepared by Ward E. McConnell, Chief Reporter, Dick Nixon Staff. The speech was televised live. This is a copy prepared for the press and was owned by Glen Lipscomb, a staff member. Nixon was accused of misusing an $18,000 campaign slush fund. His emotional address, referencing the family dog Checkers and Pat Nixon's purchase of a "good Republican cloth coat" defused the crisis and solidified Nixon's second spot on the ticket and his future political career. Selections from the Collection of Tom Charles Huston.
