John F. Kennedy: Pre-Dallas Presentation Copy of His Last Speech. Prior to coming to Dallas on that tragic day in November, President Kennedy spent November 21st in San Antonio and Ft. Worth. There were many activities planned for him and the First Lady on both days. One of these was a speech to be given at the "Dedication Ceremony/ Brooks Air Force Base, Texas/ November 21, 1963". The facility being dedicated was the Brooks Air Force Base School of Aerospace Medicine and the Aerospace Medical Center. Kennedy was the President most closely associated with the decision to land a man on the moon. In this speech, he discusses this goal in the context of the New Frontier. He concludes with: "...Whatever the difficulties, they will be overcome; whatever the hazards, they must be guarded against. With the vital help of this Aerospace Medical Center, with the help of all those who labor in the space endeavor, with the help of all Americans, we will climb this wall with safety and with speed - and we shall then explore the wonders on the other side." Despite some informal remarks given at a dinner that evening and a breakfast held the next day, this turned out to be Kennedy's last formal speech. Characteristically, he made some last minute changes in the speech as actually delivered. The speech is printed on card stock measuring 8" x 10 1/2". The Presidential Seal appears in the background in blue ink. There is some tanning along the right side from contact with another document. It is accompanied by an 8" x 10" glossy portrait of JFK stamped "Air Force Photo/ School of Aviation Medicine/ Brooks Air Force Base, Texas" on the back. Both items are contained within a silver leatherette-style paper folder. We do not believe the Kennedy Library has an example in their collection. It was obtained by the consignor from the widow of the man who built the podium used by JFK for this speech.
