John F. Kennedy: Dallas Police Department Homicide Report. The assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas generated a goodly amount of relics and ephemera, besides collectibles. This 8.5" x 11" Homicide Report was issued by the "Investigative Bureau, Police Department City of Dallas". This is apparently one of numerous carbon copies made at the time. Before photocopiers and laser printers, it was common practice for employees in any field to type an original letter or report and make copies simultaneously using carbon papers. Typically, no more than two or three copies could be made using this process. If additional copies were required, the entire process had to be completed again. We have compared this example with the one in the Dallas Police Archives and have determined both were made using the same typewriter, but some slight differences are noted (e.g., the offense of "Murder" is in all caps on the archive example, and upper and lower case on ours); otherwise, they are almost identical. Accordingly, we conclude that the Homicide Report was typed out more than once, and multiple carbon copies produced, so that all people who required copies received them. The report was contained in a safe deposit box abandoned since 1979. The contents were recently retrieved by the original owner, an elderly Dallas area resident, who was unfamiliar with the report which apparently was placed there by his wife, now deceased. We have no reason to believe this is not a completely original document.
