John F. Kennedy: Congressional Campaign Card, 1946. Printed campaign card, 3.25" x 5.5", front and back. John F. Kennedy's first foray into public life was his 1946 campaign to represent the 11th District of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives. He won the election, and served from 1947 to 1953, when he ran for and won a seat in the U.S. Senate. Literature from this earliest campaign is scarce. This card, in particular, is highly sought after. Three items are included: (1) The campaign card, bearing a portrait of the 29-year-old candidate on the front and, on the back, a brief biographical sketch and comments from the press, including a statement by the editor of Time, Life, and Fortune magazines, Henry R. Luce: "If Kennedy is characteristic of the younger generation, we would be happy to have the destinies of his country handed over to his generation at once"; (2) a photograph of the young candidate with a poster behind him bearing the same likeness as that on the card; and (3) the November 1946 issue of PIC with JFK on the cover. Magazine is in good condition. Card and photograph are in excellent condition.
