    Description

John F. Kennedy Accepts the Nomination of New York's Liberal Party, Thus Securing the Winning Margin in the 1960 Presidential Election. The Liberal Party was formed in 1944 when an element of the American Labor Party withdrew because that organization had become openly pro-Communist. Throughout the next two decades the Party played an influential role in New York politics, extending or withholding support from candidates.

Offered here is the notarized retained copy of the formal acceptance signed by John F. Kennedy of the Liberal Party's 1960 presidential nomination. The Kennedy campaign did not reach an understanding with the Party until rather late in the campaign-September 14th. On that day he spoke before a Liberal Party assemblage and made a powerful presentation of the tenets of Liberalism in his view:

"I am proud to be the only candidate in 1960 with the nomination of two political parties...I would like to say what I understand the word "Liberal" to mean and explain in the process why I consider myself to be a "Liberal"...This is my political credo: I believe in human dignity as the source of national purpose, in human liberty as the source of national action, and the human heart as the source of national compassion, and tin the human mind as the source of our invention and ideas. It is, I believe, this faith in our fellow citizens as individuals and as people that lies at the heart of the liberal faith, for liberalism is not so much a party creed or a set of fixed platform promises as it is an attitude of mind and heart, a faith in a man's ability through the experiences of his reason and judgement to increase for himself and his fellow men the amount of justice and freedom and brotherhood which all human life deserves. I believe also in the United States of America, in the promise that it contains and has contained throughout our history of producing a society so abundant and creative and so free and responsible that it cannot only fulfill the aspirations of its citizens, but serve equally well as a beacon for all mankind...Government is an art and a precious obligation; and when it has a job to do, I believe it should do it...the liberal society is a free society, and it is at the same time and for that reason a strong society. Its strength is drawn from the will of free people committed to great ends and peacefully striving to meet them. Only liberalism, in short, can repair our national power, restore our national purpose, and liberate our national energies..."

The Liberal party gave Kennedy enthusiastic support which would prove decisive in the election. Richard Nixon actually received more votes in New York than were cast for Kennedy in the Democratic column. Without the 400,000 Liberal votes, he would have lost New York-and the election!

This historic document is the only official, signed acceptance of a party's presidential nomination which we have ever encountered. It is in terrific condition, and expensively custom framed along with a large signed JFK photo inscribed with best wishes to Frankie Childs. Document 7.5" x 12.5", 29" x 20.5" as framed. Provenance: The Raab Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
