    Description

Franklin D. Roosevelt: A Presidential Letter on Overcoming One's Handicaps, Together with a Fine Signed Color Photo. After his illness and resulting paralysis, FDR seems to have undergone a spiritual transformation, and he often showed great empathy toward other with handicaps. In 1934, Roosevelt responded to a letter from an Altoona, Pennsylvania girl named Ruth Spahn on White House letterhead:

"I am glad that you felt like writing to me about yourself, and only wish that I could be of some very definite assistance to you. From your letter I am confident that you have had very excellent medical care. You probably know there in no golden road to cure or improvement in such a condition as your own, and that patience and persistence is necessary to secure further improvement. It is important that you be under proper medical supervision from time to time so that the doctors may advise as to the measures that you must follow in order to maintain your progress, which at times may seem very slow. I read between the lines of your note, however, that you are not the kind to be easily discouraged and that you will make the most out of your life in spite of its handicaps."

The letter has been elegantly custom-framed along with a 10.5" x 12.5" color photo of FDR, boldly autographed in the lower margin. 18.5" x 30.5" as framed, and accompanied by the original White House envelope. Provenance: The Raab Collection.
