    Description

Benjamin F. Butler: Vicious Campaign Cartoon from 1883. Benjamin "Beast" Butler was one of the best reviled, ridiculed and controversial politicians of the Civil War period. He was a general in the Civil War, headed the Department of the Gulf during the occupation of New Orleans, served in Congress, was once elected Governor of Massachusetts and ran for President on the Greenback Labor ticket in 1884. This 17" x 15" cartoon on grayish-tan paper depicts him as the Shakespearean villain Richard III. It is titled "Richard Three Times Over. Election Eve, November, 1883." and is signed F. Mitchell. There are three verses below, patterned after Shakespeare, wherein Butler agonizes over his transgressions and admits to being a liar and villain. Spoons appear in various locations, alluding to the theft of silverware from residents of New Orleans. Ghostly soldiers appear in columns as a remonstrance to Butler. A dilapidated soldier's home, overseen by Butler as Treasurer and a map of Massachusetts ("Dishonored by her Governor") are shown. It is currently matted and shrink-wrapped. Outside of a 1" tear at the top, it appears to be in great shape. It is the only example we have ever seen.
