    Description

Andrew Jackson: Large 1836 Hand-Colored Cartoon. 16 3/8" x 19 5/8" hand-colored lithograph published in Philadelphia or London, contrasting the political and commercial leaders of each country. President Jackson holds up a copy of the July 4, 1831 treaty between France and the U.S. that settled the issue of outstanding debts incurred by France during the Napoleonic Wars. The American group is happy and prosperous, their coffers full, guided by the example set by Washington. An open book lists the American victories in the War of 1812, including Jackson's victory at New Orleans. King Louis Philippe and his cohorts are confused, befuddled and at each other's throats. The ships "New Orleans" and "Constitution" are berthed in the American harbor. Captions highlight the difference between "The debilitated situation of a monarchial Government... " and "The flourishing condition of a well-formed industrious Republic..." Superb condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
