    Description

Abraham Lincoln: Circa 1885 Joke Book in Pictorial Wraps. M-335. "Honest Abe's Jokes: Fresh From Abraham's Bosom", originally published in 1864 by T. R. Dawley as "Old Abe's Jokes." This example is a reprint, circa 1885, published by Hurst & Company of New York. 135pp., with advertisements at the end. While the title page is a correct copy of the original, Hurst did not use the original cover, but based his cover on a 1864 song book. 50% loss to spine, but remarkably well-preserved for a wood-pulp soft-bound book of this period. Still quite rare.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
