Winfield Scott: A Rare Silver Pocket Watch Depicting Him on Horseback. The entire design is engraved. "General Scott" appears at the bottom and a row of uniformed troops, rifles at the ready, forms a background for the general's rearing steed. The opposite side features a porcelain dial with a central image of an unidentified port city. This style of watch did not have a hinged cover over the dial, but remarkably the fragile high-domed crystal has survived intact. The watch is engraved inside with the name of the engraver, "Bautte Geneva". The engraved side of the watch has acquired an even light patina of tarnish, which could, of course be easily removed. However it is our feeling that it only lends character and a sense of age. Overall the watch is in beautiful condition, with two original winding keys. However we presume it not to be in running order. One of these keys wound the movement for the minutes and hours, while the other was for a smaller dial and the bottom which contained a second hand. This is clearly a watch of quality, and not a simple "dollar novelty". While the image of Scott is a military one, this watch could as easily date from either the Mexican War or his 1852 presidential candidacy. Political pocket watches are highly sough after by collectors, and Winfield Scoff items are rare. Accordingly, this elegant watch should excite great interest. Diameter: 1.75".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
