Warren G. Harding: The Classic "Best Ever" 1 ¾-inch Celluloid. The central design matches the James Cox version also offered in this auction, but a clever advertising slogan suggests that both the candidate and the clothing manufactured by Schoenberg Bros. of Chicago are the "Best Ever." Originally a watch fob with a mirror insert in the back, the mirror has been replaced by a pin and the metal loop for the strap which was attached to the top of the collet has been carefully removed. It is impossible to know when this alteration took place, but most likely it was performed by a Harding supporter who wanted to wear it as a pin. This appears to be the color plate example from the Don Warren auction catalog, but the description of that example mentions a nick on the button edge, and there is no such nick on this copy, which is in great condition. Interestingly, the estimate in the 1981 Warner sale was $2000 (compared to $2800 for the St. Louis Cox-Roosevelt jugate and $1750 for "TR at the Gate")! From the Merrill C. Berman Collection.
