Very Rare 1860 Lincoln-Hamlin Jugate Paper Ribbon
Elegant engraved portraits with "Free Territory for a Free People" and candidate's names above. Basically crisp and "minty," with some extremely trivial surfacing rubbing about the portraits which detracts minimally. This ribbon is also known in silk. As with all Lincoln jugates, it commands a substantial price: We sold one privately nearly 15 years ago for $6000, and we know of a more recent private sale by a prominent New England dealer for somewhat over $10,000. It has never been entirely clear what the purpose of these "paper ribbons" was. Were they manufacturers' proofs, bookmarks, or intended to be worn similarly to silk versions (we have seen several different 19th century paper ribbons with old pin holes in the top indicating that they may have been worn pinned to someone's coat). Probably all three apply in some cases. In any event this is a beautiful jugate which customarily should prove more affordable than the silk version. 2 3/4" x 8". From the Joe Brown Collection.
