Stephen A. Douglas: Silk "Brady" Ribbon. This 2.5" x 7" silk ribbon depicts the 1860 Northern Democratic candidate for president, Senator Stephen Arnold Douglas of Illinois, the "Little Giant" and Lincoln's arch-rival from the Senatorial Debates of 1858. The ribbon was engraved by Buttre and the portrait copied after a photograph by Mathew Brady likely taken around 1854-5. It has light overall aging, some discoloration at the very bottom from previous mounting in an album, and some very light dampstaining at top and bottom, not affecting the portrait. For some reason, the Douglas ribbon is the hardest to source from the set of 1860 "Brady" ribbons and remains the key to completing a set.
