Martin Van Buren: Terrific Large 1840 "Spartan Association" Silk Ribbon. Not to be confused with the more frequently-seen 1848 "Free Soil" ribbon which also features a standing Van Buren. In this design Van Buren, unsuccessfully seeking re-election, holds a copy of the "Independent Treasury Bill" in his hand. Below is a paragraph quoting the President "To Commemorate the Triumph of Free Principles in the Passage of the Independent Treasury Bill." Listed, but unavailable to be pictured, by Sullivan & Fischer as MVB-14.

The ribbon is over-printed at the top with "Spartan Association." Interestingly, in the present example those words were stamped on the reverse side, rather than above the eagle as usually seen. The eagle holds a streamer reading "New York must be protected." The "Spartan Boys" were, according to the authors, "a predominantly Irish Catholic Democratic organization in New York. Affiliated informally with Tammany Hall, (they) were used on election days to get out the Democratic vote, and on occasion to harass Whig voters."

Condition is exceptional for a ribbon of this era. Only for strictest accuracy we note a couple of trivial small bits of age browning. Impressive 2.875" x 8.375" size.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
