Martin Van Buren: Rare and Desirable Portrait Sulphide Brooch. Sulphide brooches are perennial collector favorites but, for some reason, were only produced in 1840. Portrait brooches are especially difficult to procure. This 1" x 1 1/8" example (MVB-1840-15) depicts incumbent Van Buren against a black background and reads: "Van Buren and Democracy". This is a very fine example. There is some lifting of the black background that surrounds the portrait, as is typical, but no chipping or missing pieces. It is entirely intact and the white design elements are absolutely perfect. Lacks T-bar pin, but retains loop and hinge.
