Martin Van Buren: A Stunning Satin Campaign Ribbon. What can we say about this beautiful design that the photograph cannot convey more dramatically? The Merrill Berman collection contained a remarkable selection of important political ribbons, but it is easy to see why this was his personal favorite.

Listed by Sullivan & Fischer as MVB-2. They picture a different example with the critical wording above the eagle trimmed off, but we have never encountered any other example. The Van Buren & Johnson ticket did not carry Van Buren's home state of New York in 1836. In 1840, the same ticket sought to rectify the embarrassment of four years prior, but not only failed to do so, but lost the general election, as well. The slogan "New York's favourite [sic] son" below the portrait, in hindsight, represents a forlorn hope. Condition is very good overall, as the photo shows. Light aging detracts minimally, as do some trivial small tears at very top and bottom. Impressive 3.75" x 6.75" size. From the Merrill C. Berman Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
