Lincoln & Hamlin: Jugate Salt Print Ribbon. The use of photographs on campaign items was quite new in 1860. Most of the badges used ferrotypes, but salt prints were applied to ribbons and campaign cards. This 2" x 8" rose-colored cotton ribbon has salt prints of Lincoln & Hamlin in an over-under format. The ribbon is inscribed "Republican Standard Bearers. Abraham Lincoln Hannibal Hamlin. Photographed by [illeg] Galesburg, Ill." The ribbon has discolored at the very top and the inked impression is somewhat light. While both portraits are light, the Lincoln is moderately soiled while the Hamlin is quite clear. The Lincoln photo (O-21) was taken by William Marsh in Springfield on May 20, 1860, shortly after Lincoln had received the Republican nomination. We sold a perfect example a few years back for $15,000. Given its rarity and desirability, this specimen should easily be worth the estimated price.
