Lincoln & Hamlin: Jugate Salt Print Ribbon. Of the handful of Lincoln-Hamlin jugate ribbon designs known, this is arguably in the top two. It features salt print photographs of the two candidates glued to a 2" x 8" yellow silk ribbon. The Lincoln photo is O-21, taken by William Marsh in Springfield, Illinois on May 20, 1860. We sold an example in excellent condition around five years ago for $15,000. The portraits on these tend to be very light and washed out. These are quite nice and likely appear as when they were made. Unlike many campaign photographs, these are from-life portraits. The ribbon has been backed with a thin piece of silk by a professional conservator. This has repaired a horizontal, clean separation below the word "Abraham" and reinforced two partial separations. The ribbon is now totally stabile and can easily be handled. There has been a small amount of restoration to the lettering, affecting the last two letters in "Republican". All in all, it presents very well. The yellow silk is bright, clean and still has its original sheen. The portraits, as stated, are about as nice as one could hope for. We would rank this is the second nicest specimen we have seen. To our knowledge, there are only perhaps 6-8 examples known in the hobby.Auction Info
