Description

Lewis Cass: An Extremely Rare 1848 Silk Campaign Ribbon. Cass has always been considered the toughest mid-19th century candidate, and his ribbons rank with Pierce and Scott as the rarest. Perhaps a total of a dozen Cass ribbons, of several different styles, survive in the hobby today. The Berman example is an especially desirable large size, 2.875" x 7" with full original selvage across top and bottom (so many ribbons of this era have been trimmed).

Great quotation from Cass below his portrait: "If we are not struck with judicial blindness, we shall cling to this Constitution as the mariner clings to the last plank, when night and the tempest close around him." It displays light overall staining and soiling, but no severe problems which draw one's eye. On the whole a very presentable copy of this key ribbon. From the Merrill C. Berman Collection.
