John F. Kennedy: Vice Presidential Candidate Pin and Ribbon, 1956. This scarce campaign button from the Democratic National Convention measures 2.25" diameter with a ribbon measuring 2.5" x 9". In his address at the 1956 Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 16, 1956, Senator John F. Kennedy nominated Adlai E. Stevenson for president. Stevenson won the Democratic nomination and chose not to select a running mate. Instead, there was a free vote. Despite a groundswell for Senator Kennedy, Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee won the nomination for vice president. Three months later, Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower won re-election for a second term in office. Four years later, now in the public eye, John F. Kennedy won the Democratic nomination for president and was subsequently elected in November 1960. Here is a scarce button and ribbon worn to promote the vice presidential candidacy of JFK in 1956. Notably, it contains the slogan "A PROFILE IN COURAGE," referring to JFK's 1957 Pulitzer Prize-winning book Profiles in Courage. Excellent condition.
