Description
Daniel Webster: A Rare Silk Ribbon Picturing a Youthful Webster. Along with Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun, Daniel Webster dominated the United States Senate in the second quarter of the 19th century, and was considered perhaps the greatest American political orator. He would make three serious but unsuccessful runs for the Whig presidential nomination, the first in 1836. In 1840, he was outmaneuvered by Harrison and offered the vice presidency, which he declined. The ribbon offered here is very similar in format to a Harrison design (Sullivan & Fischer WH-36) and so most probably dates from 1840- a souvenir from a "Webster Dinner." Ribbon below his portrait reads "One Country, One Constitution, One Destiny."Sullivan & Fischer were able to picture only two Webster ribbons, one a mourning piece and the other of indeterminate origin. They state that "Neither his 1836 nor his 1840 presidential quest produced known varieties of campaign ribbons, although a number of medalists promoted his 1840 effort." The example offered here disproves that proposition, and is clearly a most important piece for serious collectors of early campaign ribbons. Condition is excellent, with minor light aging in the field. Length 6.5".
