Anti-Fremont: A Rare and Important Ribbon Opposed to the 1856 Republican Presidential Candidate. This extremely rare design is considered by sophisticated collectors to be among the most important of American political ribbons. Fremont and most Republicans were staunch abolitionists, occasioning this nasty satirical design. It is known in two versions, with and without the words "Black Republican" at the top, this being the preferred variant. This appears to be the example from the Don Warren collection, and is the only one we have seen on vivid yellow silk. Condition is outstanding, with several light bits of discoloration caused by bleed-through from old album mounting. One light horizontal crease, typical of ribbons of this era, is noted for accuracy. In a collection which contains perhaps the finest array of campaign ribbons ever assembled by a single hobbyist, this example is one of the true standouts. 2.375" x 6". From the Merrill C. Berman Collection.
