Description

Abraham Lincoln: Legendary George Clark Ambrotype Badge From the 1860 Campaign. One of the most iconic images of Lincoln used on 1860 photographic campaign badges is this photo taken by Mathew Brady during the legendary "Cooper Union" campaign speech. The brass shell measures approximately 65mm x 55mm. On the verso is a cardboard insert with "For President, Hon. Abraham Lincoln," as well as advertising for the manufacturer, Geo. Clark, Jr., & Co. of Boston. Still present is the remnant of a red, white, and blue ribbon bow inserted through the vertical pin, easily removed if one desired. The sensitive emulsion on the underside of the glass was very prone to damage, and the majority of known examples display such flaws to a greater or lesser degree. This example has a perfect emulsion surface. There is scattered light moisture marks appearing in the fields, which give the appearance of light soiling, darker at the far left margin. These do not affect the portrait which has great clarity and sharp contrast. A really beautiful specimen! No minimum bid. From the J.Doyle Dewitt Collection.
