    Description

Abraham Lincoln: Fantastic Example of the Iconic George Clark 1860 Campaign Ambrotype, Measuring 2.125" x 2.5". It features the "Cooper Union" portrait by Mathew Brady, and is universally regarded as the premier Lincoln photographic item from the 1860 election. Original cardboard insert or store card on reverse carries the legend, "For President, Hon. Abraham Lincoln." It features a well-centered portrait set in an embossed copper mat and preserver with original pin. While at least five companion pieces for opponents Stephen Douglas and John Bell are known, it is clear that Lincoln was by far the most popular subject. However, the vast majority of surviving examples exhibit significant condition issues: flaking or scratches on the emulsion, cracks in the glass, etc. This a fine example having a "grainy" surface when viewed at an angle, but non of the large flakes associated with other examples. The orignal card has some wear with no significant loss. Overall a very nice example worthy of inclusion in a fine Abraham Lincoln collection.

It is important to note that this rare campaign artifact has been in the same family since 1860. The piece was acquired on the east coast during the 1860 campaign, and has been passed down ending up with descendants in western Texas. What a remarkable journey!
