    Description

Abraham Lincoln: A Highly Important and Possibly Unique Brass Pinback Shell Pin with Period Provenance from the 1860 Campaign. The brass shall was most probably copied from the Lincoln medal listed as AL 1860-12. However, the engraver's initials which appear to the right of the bust are absent on this form (and is probably an unauthorized "knock off"). The shell variant is listed as AL 1860-13, but is not pictured as no example was available to photograph. It has the original pin on verso, and has been affixed since "day one" with original thread on a card, clearly penned in the 19th century, reading: "Worn by the Union men in Richmond during the Rebellion under their coats and shown to each other when they met. Presented by Hr. Crofts." Diameter 38 mm, and in excellent condition. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.
