    Description

1863 RIBBON FEATURING A QUOTE IN SUPPORT OF LINCOLN. Very unusual and colorful c. 1863 ribbon, featuring a quote in support of the Lincoln administration, from a speech by John Brough, Civil War governor of Ohio.  As a pro-war democrat, he defeated the notorious "copperhead" Clement Vallandingham for governor in 1863.  Challenges "Brother Democrats" that, if they support the administration, and it fails to put down the Rebellion, and they show to him a democrat who will "make a cleaner sweep," Brough will "enter upon the stump for his election."  Fascinating artifact of Civil War-era politics.  Excellent condition. Length 6 1/2".
