Rare Large-Size Cased c.1864 Lincoln Tintype
Another more familiar image, also taken by Berger for Brady during the same February 1864 sitting as the "$5.00 Bill Pose." An image also widely used on 1864 campaign ferros and cardboards, but quite rare in this size. Beautiful patriotic "Constitution and the Laws" case, with flags and shields in corners of brass mat. Some bubbling in the surface emulsion in the field at 1:00, as well as on a bit of Lincoln's forehead. Also on area of bubbling toward the bottom, on lower portion of his coat and vest. However, the bubbling is shallow and doesn't break the emulsion surface. Otherwise, beautiful shape. While these defects are not trivial, the overall display appeal of the item is still very nice, and it is worthy of any but the most condition-conscious collector. Interior measurement, including brass mat, is a large 2 3/4" x 3 1/4".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
