William J. Clinton: Impeachment Gavel. In 1998, the thirteen members or managers of the House Judiciary Committee voted to impeach President William Jefferson Clinton. The President was then tried by the entire Senate on the four enumerated Articles of Impeachment and acquitted, pretty much along party lines. The Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee was Illinois Congressman Henry J. Hyde. Another member of the committee was James Edward Rogan of California. This lot includes a December 12, 1998 letter from Hyde to Rogan, presenting him with the gavel that "...was personally used by me to chair the Judiciary Committee during our deliberations and vote on the Articles of Impeachment..." The gavel is 10" long and has an attached brass plaque inscribed: "Chairman Henry J. Hyde Articles of Impeachment December 11 and 12, 1998". Rogan voted for impeachment and was soundly defeated for re-election in 2000. His mostly Democratic constituency had been opposed to the procedure and vented their displeasure at the first opportunity.
