White House Furniture: Dining Room Arm and Side Chairs. Pair of mahogany chairs, each 36" high, with floral design damask seat upholstery. Each has a brass plaque attached to a corner brace, inscribed: "The White House DR 286 3-60". The "3-60" indicates the date they were placed into service. Light, normal wear, mostly to the legs and underside. These chairs belonged to George J. Szabo, a Staff White House Photographer from 1956 to 1980 who amassed a small collection of items used in the White House (we are also selling a pie-crust table and a pair of music room chairs from his holdings). Some were given as gifts to Szabo while others were acquired through direct purchase when the White House underwent redecorating. These two chairs were part of a service of fifty which saw use from 1960 to 1978. They were used for State Dinners and other White House functions. Sold together with an assortment of research material and provenance, including two three notarized letters from Szabo, a copy of his White House photo i.d. and a copy of a signed photo of him and President Truman.
