Warren G. Harding: Pile of Poker Chips. President Harding was known to enjoy a good smoke, a good game of poker and some extra-marital flings. This lot has three piles of poker chips, colored red, white and blue. They appear to be made of clay or similar composition. There are nine reds, seven whites and fourteen blues. They were used in the summer of 1923 by President Harding during the transcontinental railroad tour and voyage to Alaska. Harding died in San Francisco during the return portion of the trip. In his memoirs, Herbert Hoover, who served as Harding's Commerce Secretary and was part of the entourage, recalled that Harding incessantly played poker to calm his anxieties over growing scandals that would be investigated. Watching President Harding play poker this way, Hoover said he became forever repulsed by the game. Obtained in the 1970s from a Harding collector in his hometown of Marion, Ohio.
