Ulysses S. Grant: Lock of Hair. .75" x .75" gold locket with engraved designs on both sides and the monogram "A T". When opened, it reveals an albumen portrait of Grant on the right side and a lock of brown hair with some gray mixed in on the other side. The lock of brown hair is tied together by what seems like a lock of white hair. There is no written provenance that accompanies the piece but, given the unusual, older portrait of Grant and the color of the primary lock of hair, we feel it is very likely Grant's. The presentation was probably assembled at the time of his death in 1885. It was owned by the consignor's mother, recently passed, who obtained it sixty years ago.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
