    Description

Thomas Jefferson: Turn-down Joint Compass. Comprised of brass and steel, this 6" compass assisted Thomas Jefferson with the drawing of large circles. The primary hinge connecting the needle arm and the hold arm is in the "long-joint" style. Both arms are embellished with faceting for both design aesthetic and functional fit within the hand. A screw on the hold arm can be loosened to allow the "lengthening bar" to extend and retract for specific lengths. There is also a hinge below the lengthening bar that enables the writing implement to bend inward toward the needle. For this reason, the compass is classified a "turn-down joint" compass. At present, a small pencil remains in the hold arm. There is a bit of corrosion on the needle arm but the long-joint hinge and turn-down arm move with fluidity.
