"...piece of the coat stained with the blood of the President. Overcoat which he wore when he was assassinated Apl 14th, 1865. Rec'd from a Police Officer on duty at the Presdt. Mansion."

French was the son of Benjamin P. French, Sr., who was Commissioner of Public Buildings during Lincoln's administration.

This 3.375" x 2.25" piece, with bloodstains very apparent, is made of black broadcloth with ecru lining, matched by the consignor to the missing area of the collar on the coat displayed at Ford's Theater (see photo with website description of this lot. The collar piece and French note are ex-collection of Lloyd Osetendorf, and were part of a display frame from that collection purchased by the consignor in the 2004 auction of the Ostendorf Collection (lot 9199). It was featured in the 2011 National Geographic special "Lincoln's Secret Killer." A significant and evocative Lincoln blood relic, believed to be the largest such specimen in any private collection. Please see our website presentation of this lot for other photos and the consignor's account of his visit to Ford's Theatre to make the comparison.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
