Napoleon & Josephine Bonaparte: Exquisite Dinner Plate. 9" porcelain plate that was used by perhaps the greatest Frenchman of them all, Napoléon Bonaparte. The border is decorated in green and contains a continuous circle of stars, short swords, a meandering vine and hanging swags, with gold bands above and below. The center of the plate has a roundel that consists of a star, interspersed with floral elements, encircled by a vine. The use of gilding is quite extensive, yet the plate has a certain regal elegance. The back is marked "10.Ae.12" with an incised letter "S". It comes with a custom display case with a brass plaque that reads: "Porcelain Plate from Dinner Service used by/ Napoleon & Josephine Bonaparte/ Chateau de Malmaison 1800-1803/ Given to Clarence de la Chappelle, M.D. by/ Mrs. Campbell Hubbard". Excellent condition save for some minor shallow chips or imperfections in the gilded border on the back side of the plate. The Foundation Napoléon owns nineteen pieces of dinnerware, with the same border, but with hand-painted scenes in the center, made by Sèvres in the 1807-1811 period, designed as the "personal table service of the Emperor". Napoléon and Josephine bought the Chateau de Malmaison (a country home near Paris) in 1799. By that time, the chateau was close to 200 years old. An extensive renovation project was undertaken and, needless to say, no expense was spared. The house was fitted with the most elegant of furnishings, artworks and accoutrements. As they say, it's "good to be emperor!"
