    Description

Martha Washington: Engraved Calling Card with Provenance. 10" x 11" display board containing a 3" x 1.75" engraved calling card reading "Mrs. Washington", book engravings of Martha Washington and Martha Wilson and a period letter of provenance inscribed: "Mrs. Washington's Card left at my husband's lodgings at Mr. Saml. Caldwell's North Fourth Street Philadelphia in the year 1796". These are all affixed to a board. The reverse side has notes written in 1938 and 1968 by descendants of Mrs. Wilson. It explains that Martha Wilson (maiden name Stewart) was a personal favorite of the First Lady as both her father and husband were on General Washington's staff during the Revolutionary War. She is cited in Elizabeth Ellet's book "Women of the Revolution". This is the only example of Martha Washington's calling card we recall seeing.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
