Mamie Eisenhower: Engagement Ring Diamond. West Point "sweetheart" ring given by Dwight Eisenhower's son, John Sheldon Doud Eisenhower [West Point Class of 1944], to Barbara Jean Thompson, upon their engagement. The couple were married on June 10, 1947. Mamie Eisenhower, according to research done by the consignor, took the diamond from her engagement ring and gave it to her daughter-in-law as a present who then had it mounted in her ring. The West Point "sweetheart" ring given by Ike to Mamie on St. Valentine's Day 1916 is currently in the West Point museum. It was a miniature version of his West Point class ring with an amethyst set in gold. Ike later gave her a traditional "civilian" engagement ring with a 1.5 carat diamond set in platinum. He went into debt to make the purchase, but was able to pay it off quickly with poker winnings. This diamond is the same size, 1.5 carats, round European cut, clarity VS-1, color H. The ring is size 5 3/4 and is stamped on the inside with the name of the maker, Herff-Jones. Total weight 6 grams. Sold as lot 161 in Sotheby's September 24, 2015 auction of "Property from the Estate of Barbara Eisenhower Foltz". Wear to eagle and shield design elements.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
