Lyndon B. Johnson: Great Society Bill Signing Pens from 1965. 28" x 38 1/2" custom shadow-box frame containing a complete set of fifty pens used to sign all pieces of legislation from the first session of the 89th Congress. The Presidential Seal appears at top. Each pen has a hard plastic plaque with the name of the bill and the date of its signing. Some of the pivotal legislation of the 20th century is represented, most notably the Voting Rights Act, the Housing Act and Medicare. We also note Aid to Appalachia, Disarmament, International Monetary Fund, Older Americans, Silver Coinage, Clean Air and too many to mention. Two other plaques read: "With These Fifty Pens, President B. Johnson Signed into Law the Foundation of the Great Society Which Was Passed by the Historic and Fabulous First Session of the 89th Congress" and, below, "Presented to Senator George Smathers by President Lyndon B. Johnson Oct. 23, 1965." Florida Senator Smathers and fellow-Democrat Johnson were close allies. The President assembled this set and gave it to Smathers. We include several photos of the two together, including two examples that show LBJ signing a piece of legislation with Smathers in the picture.
