    Description

John F. Kennedy: Personalized Campaign Souvenir. During the 1960 presidential campaign, candidate Kennedy flew across the country in an airplane christened the "Caroline". In the successful conclusion of the campaign, it seemed appropriate that some gift or memento of the campaign be given to staff members and reporters who accompanied JFK on his flights. These are, of necessity, limited in number and quite rare... unique, in fact, as each example was personalized. This 5 ½" x 3 ½" x 1" Lucite cigarette case was given to Angele de T. Gingras, a journalist often assigned to cover First Ladies and candidates' wives. It shows the "Caroline", is inscribed "Presidential Campaign 1960" and has the facsimile signature of John F. Kennedy. We believe this to be the first auction appearance. An example is listed in Harvey Goldberg's recent, exemplary reference work on Kennedy political artifacts as JFK-3D-116. Outside of some light scratches and an indelible nicotine stain on the inside lid, it is in excellent condition. The plane was eventually donated to the Kennedy museum and a separate, dated souvenir produced to mark the event. The lot includes a small, engraved calling card of John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
